Review #48 – Brutal Brewing Pistonhead Full Amber 62/100
As far as lagers go, there is a lot of shit out there, but there are some hidden gems out there. To be honest, my expectations were low, I bought this beer from my local supermarket, I had never heard of the brewery and it was pretty cheap, but decided it was worth a try. I was quite pleasantly surprised, and it wasn’t until I opened the beer that I saw it had been dry hopped with citra and cascade hops.
Out of the bottle and into a nice half pint glass, as described, the beer pours a very deep ‘full amber’ colour. Generous, lively, brilliant white head and what looks like quite a high level of carbonation.
On the nose, there is a very slight caramel sweetness, delicate floral aromas with notes of zesty lemon and fresh orange.
On the palate there is an initial hit of malty sweetness, followed by flavours of spiced orange, grapefruit, clove, aniseed and lemongrass. Quite a nice beer, but nothing to write home about really.
